My story

I’ve grown up around diabetes for as long as I can remember.
Not through textbooks, statistics, or awareness campaigns, but through my family, through fear, through hospital rooms, and through watching someone I love fight every single day just to stay alive.

My older brother was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just two years old. At an age where most children are learning to speak properly, he was learning about needles, blood sugar levels, and survival. The doctors told my family that if he hadn’t been diagnosed when he was, he would have died. Those words never really leave you. They become part of your story too.

Growing up, diabetes was always there. It sat quietly in the background of birthdays, school trips, holidays, and ordinary family moments. It meant interrupted nights, emergency snacks, hospital appointments, and the constant awareness that something could go wrong at any moment. But it also taught me resilience. It taught me how strong people can be when they have no other choice.

When my brother was diagnosed my parents were told he wouldn’t live past 30.

This year, we celebrated his 35th birthday.

That birthday meant more than candles on a cake. It meant defiance. It meant survival. It meant five extra years that at one point were never promised. Watching him reach that milestone reminded me just how much people living with diabetes battle every single day, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

That is why I’m walking 500,000 steps between the 1st of July and the 30th of September.

Every step is for the people who live with diabetes every hour of every day. Every step is for families who know the fear of waiting rooms and late night alarms. Every step is for children diagnosed too young to understand what’s happening to them. And every step is for my brother, who has spent 33 years proving the odds wrong.

This challenge is bigger than fitness. Bigger than numbers on a watch or miles on a road. It’s about awareness, gratitude, resilience, and hope. It’s about honouring the strength I’ve witnessed my whole life and turning that into something meaningful.

500,000 steps may sound like a lot. But compared to a lifetime of living with diabetes, it’s nothing.

So from July 1st to September 30th, I walk with purpose.
For my brother.
For every family affected by diabetes.
And for the belief that nobody’s future should ever be limited by a diagnosis.
